Who Wears Wigs

For beauty purposes, the wig has remained through the ages. In modern times, the wig has provided both men and women with a little comfort. Nowadays, there are three main wearers of wigs. People with Alopecia, people undergoing Chemotherapy, and people who wear them simply for fashion.

Alopecia

Alopecia Areata is considered an auto immune disease, in which the immune system, mistakenly attacks the hair folicles, the tiny cup-shaped structures from which hairs grow. This can lead to hairloss on the scalp and everywhere. Although uncommon, the disease can progress to total loss of hair on the head (Alopecia Areata Totalis), or complete loss of hair on the head, face, and body (Alopecia Areata Universalis).

In Alopecia Areata, immune system cells called white blood cells, attack the rapidly growing cells in the hair folicles that make the hair. The affected hair folicles become small and drastically slow down production. The stem cells that supply the folicle with new cells are not targeted. So the folicle always has the potential to grow. Usually, there is a trigger, (a virus or something in the individuals environment) which causes the attack on the folicles.

Alopecia often occurs in people whose family members have other auto-immune diseases, such as diabetes or thyroid disease. People with Alopecia Areata, do often have a higher occurrence of thyroid disease, atopic eczema, nasal allergies, and asthma.

Chemotherapy

As you may be aware, Chemotherapy involves the use of treatments to combat Cancers. These treatments differ in strength. A GP or Specialist will be able to tell you the difference between these treatments. It is known that of the treatments available, hair loss is a side effect, but does not occur in every instance. It is advised to talk to your GP or Specialist before Chemotherapy is commenced.
